Former Premier League stars Ryan Babel and Mesut Ozil were left disappointed in the race to win the Turkish Super League this season after they both missed out on the title. Dutchman Babel plays his club football for Galatasaray, while Ozil is on the payroll at Fenerbahce after his Arsenal contract was cancelled in January. Ozil had six months left on his Gunners contract before an agreement was reached to terminate it for him to sign for his present team.
Ahead of the final day of the season on Saturday, the three teams (Beskitas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce) had the chance to win the league. Beskitas was at the top of the table heading to final day of the season via goal difference, while Fenerbahce was in third place and two points behind both Galatasaray and leaders Beskitas.
Fenerbahcedid their job on the final day by beating Kayerispor 2-1 after going a goal down until the final minute. Ecuadorian national team striker Enner Valencia scored the equaliser from the penalty spot on the stroke of full-time before Serdar Aziz scored a dramatic winner nine minutes into injury time given. The win didn’t do much for managerEmreBelozogluand his players as they started the game and ended it in the same third position.
For Ryan Babel and his Galatasaray teammates, they were able to secure a 3-1 win over YeniMatalyaspor. Ryan Babel scored the second goal for his team but it was not enough to give them the league title thanks to the 2-1 away win recorded by eventual champions Beskitas over Goztepe.
Beskitas sealed their first league title since 2017 by a solitary goal difference from rivals Galatasaray.
